On an RC car they sit beside bearings and gears to set endplay, control how far a shaft can float in its housing, and space gears so that they mesh on the correct part of the tooth face rather than riding high or low.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThat last point is where shims earn their keep. A gear that meshes even slightly off will run noisy, wear fast and eventually strip, and the fix is almost always a tenth of a millimetre of shim rather than a new part.
