That makes it a precision component rather than a housing. Velvet Coating is a low-friction surface treatment applied to that bore, and its purpose is to cut the sliding friction between the piston and the wall. In a damper that friction is called stiction, and it is why a shock can fail to respond to very small suspension inputs at all until the force builds enough to break it free. Reducing it means the suspension reacts to small bumps and ripples instead of skating over them, which shows up as a car that feels more planted on rough or washboard surfaces.

The coating also extends the working life of the bore, which is what determines whether a case can still seal properly after many rebuilds.

At 61mm this is the long case used at the rear. Two are supplied, one axle's worth. This is the upgrade over the standard uncoated IF346-01, and it fits the Inferno MP9, MP9e and MP777 rear shocks.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0567/0554/8376/files/kyoif346-01v_c07c3520-64e6-4e39-9cfd-ae353a3e8781.jpg?v=1786242330
