Velvet Coating is a low-friction surface treatment applied to the bore, and the goal is to reduce the sliding friction between the piston and the case wall. In a damper, that friction is called stiction, and it is the reason a shock can fail to respond to very small suspension inputs at all until the force builds enough to break it free. Lower stiction means the suspension reacts to the small stuff, which shows up as a car that feels more planted over ripples and washboard.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe coating also improves the wear life of the bore surface itself, which is the part of a shock case that determines whether it can still seal after many rebuilds.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 47mm this is the short front case, supplied two to a pack.
