Those two requirements pull against each other, which is why the pivot is a wearing part rather than a permanent one.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhen it wears, the shock starts to rock in its mount instead of compressing cleanly. The practical effect is that the first part of every suspension input is absorbed by slop rather than by the damper, so the car feels vague over small bumps and inconsistent side to side. It usually announces itself as a knock you can hear over rough sections.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eReplacing the pivots restores the shock to moving in a single clean plane.
