If you like the streamlined sleekness of Diesels (and who doesn’t) you’ll go for this new American Flyer “Silver Streak” beauty that can rocket your Pullmans along at a fast clip or handle the heaviest freight load like a champion. Single “A” unit is powered by a big-capacity worm-drive motor that provides realistic starting and stopping and has lots of climbing ability. Die-cast trucks, louvres, vents, grilles, etc., are all made to perfect 3/16″ scale. Has colorful “Silver Streak” markings. Measures 12¼″ long

The Gilbert Engine 405 was originally planned to be made in an A and B pair. Gilbert never made a Silver Streak “B” Unit. 405 Silver Streak “A” Unit came in set number 5205W with an American Flyer 660 Combine, American Flyer 661 Coach & American Flyer 662 Vista Dome plastic passenger cars. There was no Observation car included. The American Flyer Locomotive 405 Diesel has air chime.

American Flyer had three basic types of diesel trucks. Diesel naming convention moved away from the steam Whyte system and focused on Axels instead of wheels. GP7 trucks with two powered axles, PA/PB trucks with simulated three powered axles (also used on the EP-5 Electric style locomotive) and the Baldwin diesel trucks had two powered axles. The F9 may have simply used the Baldwin trucks. This would make the GP7 locomotives B-B type, the PA/PB and electric locomotives C-C type and the Baldwins, B-B type also. F9′s probably B-B as well.
