LIONEL 6468 B&O AUTO BOXCAR, BLUE, 53-55
LIONEL 6468 B&O AUTO BOXCAR, BLUE, 53-55
The Baltimore & Ohio Automobile Box Car No. 6468 was in production from 1953 until 1955. These automobile cars were the same size as the 6464 Series Box Cars, however, the doors were changed on these cars as were the door guides for them. Use of the double doors entailed a modification to the basic 10-1/2" box car mold. They were painted to match the color of the car. There are three variations:
Variation A: Shiny BLUE painted black plastic body and doors.
Variation B: Flat BLUE painted clear plastic body, with a flat blue-painted black plastic door.
Variation C: Manufactured in 1955 only, this rare TUSCAN BROWN painted variation came only in set No. 1535W. The box had a rubber stamped "X" on the end flaps. This car replaced the No. 6464-50 as was illustrated in the 1955 advance catalog.
A note on Variation C: Collectors have speculated for years why Lionel would issue this TUSCAN BROWN colored car in only one set in 1955. The only conclusion that can be reached is that this was for promotional reasons. This limited issue accounts for its rarity as one of the Post War’s most cherished variations.
