The P & H Crane Car No. 6828 was produced on a BLACK No. 6424-11 chassis between 1960 and 1963. It was reissued in 1966. This car came with early AAR trucks and disc couplers. Heat stamped "HARNISCHFEGER MILWAUKEE WISCONSIN", the crane was available for separate sale under the No. 6828-100 only in 1960.

Issued later during the Modern Era by MPC, these cranes are sometimes substituted for this post war version. Collectors should use caution when purchasing this car. Original productions came with a booklet titled P & H: The Story of a Trademark that we have shown below. This booklet was eliminated from the 1966 production of this car. Also included was fold out instruction sheet No. 6828-149 that was not dated.

The small parts for the crane kit were called Assembly No. 6828-141 and were contained in an parts envelope that was numbered 6828-142. We’ve pictured this envelope to the right.

Complete reproductions of the P & H Crane kit are not available, although, some of the commonly missing parts have been reproduced. It is difficult today to find kits that do not lack some parts. Also see: P & H Steam Shovel Car No. 6827.

There are three variations:

Variation A: Used mold 6424-11, Die 4. YELLOW cab for the crane.

Variation B: YELLOW ORANGE cab for the crane. A slightly scarcer variation.

Variation C: Produced on a RED mold No. 6424-11 chassis that have frame rail extensions and housed in a 1966 display box that is pictured above. To see more about frame rail extensions go to No. 6820. Verification of authenticity should be sought from experts before purchase of this rare variation. The flat car load is inconsequential.

This could make a great addition to your collection railroad layout or gift for a friend
