An infrared light barrier works by having the transmitter emit invisible IR light that the receiver detects; when something interrupts the beam, the receiver registers the break. Note that because the light barrier operates at very low currents, it must be used together with articles that provide the necessary receiving electronics, such as the Busch time switch 5963 or electronic relay 5740.
