A pack of five shims measuring 8mm inside diameter by 12mm outside by 0.2mm thick.

Shims sit beside bearings and gears to set endplay, control how far a shaft can float in its housing, and space gears so they mesh on the correct part of the tooth face rather than riding high or low. That last point is where they earn their keep. A gear meshing even slightly off will run noisy, wear quickly and eventually strip, and the correct fix is almost always a couple of tenths of a millimetre of shim rather than replacing the gear.

They are also what you reach for when an assembly has developed a small amount of play after wear. Rather than accepting the slop, a shim of the right thickness takes it back out.
