Print radiation-shielding parts using any open-architecture FFF/FDM 3D printer. With 88–94% pure tungsten content, Rapid 3DShield is the printable alternative to lead shielding—no sintering required, used directly in its green state.

Available Formats:
Spools: 1.75mm and 2.85mm diameters in 0.5kg, 1kg, 3kg, and 5kg weights
Pellets: 1kg, 3kg, and 5kg units

Filament Density:
7.80g/cc – 9.20g/cc

Metal Content:
88.0% – 94.0% pure tungsten

High Compatibility:
Works with virtually any open-architecture 3D printer—no proprietary hardware or specialized equipment required. Also compatible with 3D printing pens.

Easy Printing Experience:

  • Print with a 0.8mm hardened steel, standard flow nozzle

  • Prints similar to PLA

  • Minimal to no warping

  • Ensure the filament feeds straight into the extruder

  • Less hygroscopic than PLA

    • Do not dry this filament—drying will degrade the binder

👉 Print this test model to ensure you're getting the highest density you can. The model should weigh 5.5g or more.

Special Qualities — No Sintering Required:

Used directly in the printed (green) state as a lead-free replacement for radiation shielding. Custom geometries that are impossible to machine from solid tungsten can be printed in hours.

☢️ Working on a nuclear, medical, or defense shielding program?
We supply hospitals, radiopharmacies, national laboratories, and defense primes with tungsten filament in bulk. We also work with R&D teams on custom shielding configurations and qualified material data. Email info@thevirtualfoundry.com for volume pricing and program inquiries. We respond within 1 business day.

Large orders may be subject to longer lead times. Contact us for more accurate lead times.

Due to a global supply crunch and shifting export controls, tungsten market prices have reached historic highs in early 2026, directly impacting our raw material costs. We have adjusted our pricing to reflect these current market conditions and remain committed to lowering our rates as soon as global supply stabilizes and tungsten prices retreat.

FAQ:

❓ Can I print this on my printer?
✅ Filamet™ is compatible with nearly all FFF/FDM based 3D printers on the market. Switch out the nozzle for a 0.8mm hardened steel nozzle and get printing! The list of printers that have been used and the ones that are not compatible can be found here: https://thevirtualfoundry.com/trusted-printers/

❓ Can I sinter Rapid 3DShield Tungsten Filament?
✅ No, tungsten sinters at about 2734°C (4953°F), which is not an attainable temperature for most furnaces. Rapid 3DShield Tungsten is intended to be used in its green state. All radiation data on this filament is from green state testing.

❓ How effective is it compared to lead shielding?
✅ Solid tungsten (19.3 g/cc) is denser than lead (11.3 g/cc). As printed, Rapid 3DShield Tungsten is 7.8–9.2 g/cc, so a printed wall needs somewhat more thickness than solid lead for the same attenuation, in exchange for being lead-free and printable in any shape. See the testing data link above for measured attenuation values.

❓ How strong are parts right off the printer?
✅ They are quite a bit stronger than you may expect. You can throw them around a little and handle them just fine. Generally, they will not handle load nearly as well as the base PLA would on its own.
