LIONEL 54 BALLAST TAMPER, 58-61, 66, 68-69
The Ballast Tamper No. 54 came equipped with one BLUE operator in the cab of the YELLOW body that has BLACK heat-stamped lettering and one plastic fixed coupler. Has an ornamental horn on top of the cab along with two ornamental forward facing floodlights.
This unit would only go in the forward direction. There is no reverse on this unit. While the tamping action was operating the unit traveled at half speed. It also came with two track clips to start and stop the tamping action automatically. The track clip pictured above was designed to work on Super-O track, but would also function on O Gauge, or O27 Gauge track. Note: hauling more than one or two light weight cars can seriously overheat the motor. Caution is urged in operating this unit.
The ballast tamper was available from 1958 until 1961, and was again produced from 1966 until 1969. There was no light on this unit, and the antenna that is located on the rear of the unit is easily lost or damaged.
There are no variations.
