The Derrick Car No. 6670was a cut down version of theNo.6660and was available in 1959 and 1960. The derrick was not attached to a stamped steel metal base. Instead the derrick was directly riveted to the flat car chassis. Also, gone were the stabilizing outriggers that came with theNo.6660. Despite this, the derrick car still offered a lot of play value. Which is why this car is hard to find today without the derrick rivet loosened where it is attached to the chassis of the car. This car was equipped with AAR trucks that are riveted to the chassis and both trucks have disc couplers.
In 1958, when Lionel started using their new AAR plastic trucks they moved the car number to the left of the "LIONEL" inscription on the sides of these cars. In what is believed to be a factory error that occurred during the heat-stamping, this car is found with the number to the right. Which accounts for some of the variations listed below.
There are five variations:
Variation A:Built on chassisNo. 6511-2casting with "6670" to the right of the "LIONEL" serif lettered inscription. Has aDARKER REDplastic color.
Variation B:Identical asVariation A, but built on castingNo. 6424-11.
Variation C:Identical asVariation A, but the number "6670" moved to the left of the "LIONEL" serif lettered inscription.
Variation D:Identical asVariation C, but built on castingNo. 6424-11.
Variation E:Identical asVariation D, but is aBRIGHTER REDcolor.
